Erlangen may not be a well known town for tourists, but it is a wonderful town to stop by for those looking for the road less traveled (and less big city). Home to the Siemens Headquarters (medical equipment company) and a local college, this town also boasts a beautiful botanical garden, museums, and is a short drive or train ride from the better known Nuremburg, Rothenburg, and Bamburg. As it is located out of the prime tourist location, hotels are much more affordable without being much of an inconvenience.
Back street of Grauer Wolf |
Located in the near the pedestrian only walkway in Erlangen, the Grauer Wolf is a short walk from a variety of shops, restaurants, and public transportation. Stroll along the well kept pedestrian walk as you enjoy window shopping or head to the nearby botanical gardens. See our recommendation for Da Cesare Goldener Hecht .
Once in the hotel, you will find a spacious breakfast area off to the side serving a lovely German buffet style breakfast. We opted out of the breakfast here as it was slightly more expensive and we wanted to explore the options available nearby. Continuing through the lobby back outside, you enter the parking area. Check in before trying to park, as the parking may be difficult to find (located in a courtyard like parking lot which can be accessed from the back of the hotel. Parking is tight as with most hotels throughout Europe, but you shouldn't have a problem if you're driving a car. There is no lift, requiring you to climb up to three flights of stairs. If you have no problem with a few stairs, you will have no issue with this hotel. The rooms are quite spacious. Our room offered a bathroom separated by a short hallway from the bedroom. There is also a sitting/desk area and a walk in closet. Rooms had views either of the parking area or the nearby street, but were generally quiet in the evenings. This was impressive as Erlangen is a college town and we were there on the weekend when many pubs were open late. Wifi was free and worked wonderfully. Each room had two bottles of sparkling water. This is not as quaint as some of the smaller hotels we've stayed at and seems geared towards those traveling for business or school, however, we would stay again and would recommend this lodging for anyone in the area.
